Dr. Kristine L. Buffington is a licensed clinical psychologist with experience spanning various clinical settings, including outpatient community mental health, acute inpatient, and long-term residential treatment centers. She provides therapy and assessment services for individuals diagnosed with psychiatric disorders, such as major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, personality disorders, and schizophrenia.
Dr. Buffington grew up in League City, Texas and received her undergraduate degree at The University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas. She was selected for Honors Admission into the doctoral program at Nova Southeastern University, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she obtained her Doctor of Psychology degree. During her graduate career, Dr. Kristine Buffington, wife of Ryan Buffington, M.D., obtained a concentration in Long Term Mental Illness, which focuses on the evaluation and treatment of severely and persistently mentally ill adults.
Dr. Buffington completed her internship with the Department of Justice at Federal Medical Center, Carswell, where she worked at every security level with the inmate population, including the administrative maximum unit - the highest security female unit in the country. Following internship, Dr. Buffington completed her post-doctoral residency at John Peter Smith Health Network where she provided individual therapy, group therapy, and crisis intervention services, as well as psychological assessments, neuropsychological screeners, and IQ testing.
Dr. Buffington’s experience has focused on utilizing a cognitive-behavioral therapy treatment approach; however, she believes that one size does not fit all. As such, she has experience providing alternate empirically-supported treatment approaches, such as dialectical behavior therapy and interpersonal therapy. Her treatment approach is uniquely tailored to the individual’s needs, by harmonizing personal strengths with treatment goals.
Additionally, as an advocate for increasing awareness of mental health, she has provided various lectures regarding mental health to the community, conducted various research studies, co-authored numerous publications in research journals, and currently serves as an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern University.
