ADHD Q & A

What are the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder?

ADHD appears as a collection of symptoms. A child or adult may have trouble completing tasks and move from task to task aimlessly. Other symptoms include:

  • Disorganization and loses things easily
  • Difficulty paying attention to detail
  • Doesn’t listen when spoken to directly
  • Frequent careless mistakes
  • Forgetful about daily activities
  • Easily distracted

Children with ADHD may have trouble sitting still, run or climb when not appropriate, or talk excessively. Adults with ADHD may also have trouble sitting still or paying attention during conversations.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

ADHD, especially in adults, can manifest subtly and be hard to diagnose. Occasional symptoms of ADHD, especially in children, can be simple normal behaviors. You may consider treatment if the behavior is inappropriate for the person’s age, if it interferes with work or school, or if it negatively affects relationships.

ADHD can lead to depression or anxiety, especially in teens. Up to 60% of individuals who experience ADHD in childhood continue to experience ADHD as an adult.

How is ADHD treated?

Dr. Buffington uses his medical experience to diagnose ADHD. Medications, therapy, and lifestyle adjustments are effective ways to address ADHD symptoms and normalize daily function. As such, Dr. Ryan Buffington works collaboratively with the clinical psychologists at Buffington Family Medicine to provide individuals diagnosed with ADHD with integrated care.

Treatment starts with the lowest possible dose of medications to find one that manages symptoms. Dr. Buffington considers all organic and environmental factors that may contribute to symptoms, too. Additionally, through therapy, individuals learn how to manage their ADHD-related symptoms, by focusing on reducing distractibility and impulsivity, while improving areas in which ADHD may have affected their personal lives.

If you or a child are exhibiting symptoms of ADHD, consult with the expert team at Buffington Family Medicine. They can offer psychiatric support to reduce symptoms and improve school, work, and social functioning.
