Testosterone Treatment Q & A

What is testosterone?

Testosterone is a male sex hormone. It’s produced primarily in a man’s testicles, but women produce some testosterone, too. Testosterone is responsible for a man’s fat distribution, muscle strength, muscle mass, sex drive, and sperm production.

A man’s testosterone levels peak in adolescence and gradually decrease as he ages.

What are the symptoms of low testosterone levels?

A man suffering from low testosterone may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Fatigue and a decrease in motivation
  • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia
  • Emotional changes, including a decrease in self-confidence and depression
  • Reduced sexual desire, including erectile dysfunction and fewer erections
  • Physical changes, including increased body fat, reduced muscle mass, reduced bone density, and some loss of body hair

Our providers will confirm low testosterone levels through a simple blood test. If your testosterone levels are clinically low, you may benefit from testosterone injections or topical creams.

Who experiences low testosterone levels?

If you don't have enough testosterone, it's known as hypogonadism. About 40% of men older than 45 have low testosterone. If you have diabetes and obesity, you're at a higher risk of diminished testosterone levels, too.

How is low testosterone treated?

Buffington Family Medicine offers testosterone replacement therapy. Our team of providers have experience in managing this therapy so you avoid any possible side effects. The goal is to make treatment quick, easy, and effective. You’re monitored directly through out your treatment. When managed medically, testosterone therapy is safe and effective.

During the initial consult with you it is important to disclose any relevent medical history such as: an untreated heart problem, a history of high red blood cell counts, or sleep apnea. We will also discuss your family planning interests, as testosterone therapy can interfere with your fertility.

How soon will I feel the impact of testosterone replacement therapy?

Most men experience an improvement within three to six weeks. You may notice:

  • An increase in sex drive
  • More energy and better mood
  • Resolution or improved symptoms of erectile dysfunction
  • Improved muscle definition and easier fat loss

Maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet, regular exercise, and not smoking also help improve testosterone levels and complement testosterone replacement therapy.

If you suffer from low energy levels and physical changes that suggest low testosterone, call Buffington Family Medicine for a solution.
